BIRDS OF PARADISE

Juliet Fraser & Hannah Weirich Miry Concert Hall , Ghent

It was once thought that birds of paradise never touched the ground. Soprano and violin present floating compositions by Kristine Tjøgersen, Helge Sten, and a creation by Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir.

Red bird of paradise, black sicklebill, curly-crested mandible, grunting bird of paradise, little bird of paradise, emperor bird of paradise, Goldie's bird of paradise, Bruijn's sicklebill, yellow-collared bird of paradise… Nature's imagination is infinite. Merely listing all the birds of paradise that inhabit the forests of Papua New Guinea and Australia brings a whole array of sounds and colors to life. These birds inspired Kristine Tjøgersen to create the composition *The Shape-Shifters* (The Metamorphoses). The song of birds of paradise resonates in the voice and the violin – two instruments that, just as people used to think about birds of paradise, never touch the ground!

Two exceptional artists with boundless curiosity and impressive artistic careers lend their voices, subtly colored by electronics, to a concert that will also feature the swaying soundscapes of Helge Sten and a creation by the Icelandic Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir.
